Butler gathers passages from Erewhon, The Fair Haven, Life and Habit, Evolution, Old and New and Unconscious Memory, and adds a combative critique of George Romanes’s Mental Evolution in Animals, accusing him of borrowing ideas on inherited memory. The volume closes with his comic poem “A Psalm of Montreal”.
