The French critic Émile Faguet wrote this short primer to excite a beginner’s curiosity rather than exhaust it. He moves rapidly through the thinkers before Socrates, the Sophists, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Epicureans and Stoics, then on through medieval thought, Bacon and Descartes to the modern philosophers.
