The narrator’s first memory is of weeping because he could not tack the sunlit leaf patterns to his nursery floor. From that boyhood the story follows him into the royal court of an imaginary European kingdom, with its capital at Karena, its generals, prisoners and love interests, written, the author notes, fifteen months before the First World War broke out.
