Charley Steele is a brilliant Montreal barrister, cynical, cold and often drunk, who wins a murder case he knows should be lost. When a beating in a tavern leaves him without memory, he begins life again in a small French-Canadian village, among priests, a tailor and a woman who knows nothing of his past. Parker’s own introduction recalls the novel’s making.
