On a sunny afternoon the crowds of Naples gather for the weekly lottery drawing, and Serao follows the hopes it feeds through every class: shopkeepers and servants, a doctor who courts a nobleman’s daughter, the proud Marquis di Formosa who refuses him, and all who seek winning numbers in dreams, saints and cabbalistic tricks.
