At the end of the nineteenth century Otto van Oudijck governs a district of Java as Dutch Resident, rational, hardworking and certain of his career. His young wife Léonie drifts into affairs, his family frays, and a feud with the proud Javanese regent brings uncanny events that reason cannot explain, as the island’s hidden force works against the colonisers.
