Working toward an English edition of the Finnish Kalevala, W. F. Kirby found its Estonian neighbour so different that he retold it in full: the marriages of Salme and Linda, the death of Kalev, and the giant son’s adventures with sorcerers, sword-smiths and his own brothers, canto by canto. The second half gathers Estonian folk tales never before printed in English.
The fullest older English account of the Kalevipoeg, valuable for lovers of Baltic and Finnic legend. Download the free EPUB.
