Stevens, who had worked in the lumber camps himself, retells the loggers’ legend as a run of comic epics: the Winter of the Blue Snow, the Sourdough Drive, the Black Duck Dinner and the camp’s wanderings into the Kingdom of Kansas and New Iowa, with a crew that includes Cream Puff Fatty the baker. His introduction traces the giant to a French-Canadian fighter of 1837.
