The American historian and philosopher surveys the folklore of many peoples: tales of how fire came down from heaven, werewolves and swan-maidens, myths of light and darkness, the stories of barbaric cultures and the primeval ghost-world. Following Max Müller’s school, he reads much of it as nature-myth about the sun and storm, a theory later scholars largely abandoned.
A readable classic of Victorian comparative mythology, interesting for its stories and its period method. Download the free EPUB.
