Spence surveys the religion of ancient Egypt from its rediscovery by modern explorers to the cult of Osiris, the great gods, the priesthood and its mysteries, magic, the animal and foreign gods of the late period, and Egyptian art. Along the way he retells tales from Egyptian literature, such as the magician Uba-aner and his wax crocodile, and reads the animal gods through the anthropology of his day.
An accessible early twentieth-century introduction to Egyptian myth, illustrated by Evelyn Paul, though its theories of totemism are now dated. Download the free EPUB.
