O’Donnell begins with an apparition he saw at the age of five in a West Country town and goes on to elementals, phantasms of the living and dead, death warnings and the hauntings of the old Sydersterne parsonage. He closes with his own theories about spirits, some of them, like his remarks on the mentally ill, expressing the prejudices of his time.
