Lucy Fountain, an orphaned heiress of beauty and quiet good sense, is passed between her guardians: her uncle at Font Abbey and the merchant Bazalgette, whose lively wife cannot resist a flirtation. Suitors gather, among them a clergyman, a fashionable heir and the blunt naval officer David Dodd, who lacks only money and polish.
