Parker was indicted for obstructing the rendition of the fugitive slave Anthony Burns, and prepared a defence he never got to deliver. He published it anyway: a sustained attack on the Fugitive Slave Law, on the judges enforcing it, and on the idea that an unjust statute binds the conscience.
