With their fathers away, two young men of Naples have fallen in love unwisely, Octave secretly marrying the penniless Hyacintha and Léandre losing his heart to a girl believed to be a gypsy. When the old men return, the servant Scapin sets to work with lies, disguises and outright extortion to squeeze money from them and save the lovers.
