A five-act comedy of London fashion in which a young nobleman is pushed toward a marriage of money with Miss Alscrip, an heiress whose new wealth cannot buy her manners, while his heart lies elsewhere. Lady Emily, the toadying Mrs. Blandish and a family of social climbers complete the tangle of pride, snobbery and hidden worth, with Mrs. Inchbald’s critical remarks as a preface.
A polished 1786 comedy by the general who surrendered at Saratoga, much admired in its day. Download the free EPUB.
