Letitia Hardy is engaged to the fashionable Doricourt, who returns from his travels and finds her insipid. Rather than give him up, she plays the awkward country hoyden to repel him, then captivates him in disguise at a masquerade. Around them, London rakes plot against the innocent Lady Frances Touchwood.
