Most of these sketches first ran in the Denver Tribune in late 1881 as The Tribune Primer, Field’s parody of children’s reading books, in which cheerful lessons about turkeys, gravy and naughty boys take macabre turns. Comic poems such as “Good James and Naughty Reginald” and “The Joyful Whirligig” complete the collection, with illustrations by John C. Frohn.
Dark, deadpan American humour from the poet of “Little Boy Blue” in a much less sentimental mood. Download the free EPUB.
