Fanny, once a performer in a touring troupe of chorus girls, has married Vernon Wetherell, Lord Bantock, and arrives at his Rutlandshire seat to rule the household. The butler, the housekeeper, the maids and the footman turn out to be one large family with ideas of their own about her, while her old business manager and her former companions threaten to arrive and expose her past.
