Wheeler begins with a boyhood in Corsica and schooldays in France, then follows the young artillery officer through the Corsican volunteers, the eve of the Terror and his first fight with the English at Toulon. From there the narrative moves through the campaigns of Italy, Egypt and Germany, with battles such as Jena described in close and vivid detail.
