Kimble Bent, an American-born soldier in a British regiment, deserted during the New Zealand wars of the 1860s and went over to the Hauhau Maori, living as slave, craftsman and companion among the fighting tribes of Taranaki. Cowan set down his story from Bent’s own recollections, with battles, bush life and Maori custom; its language about the Maori is that of 1911.
A strange, first-hand frontier narrative and a vivid source on the Taranaki wars. Download the free EPUB.
