Edited for the Navy Records Society, Gardner’s recollections run ship by ship through his service in the Georgian navy, from the Boreas and the Conqueror to his later commands. He sketches captains, messmates, eccentrics and rogues, cutting-out expeditions and narrow escapes, with a sharp eye for character and a fund of comic anecdote.
