Jean Rapp, an Alsatian soldier who rose under Desaix in Egypt to become Napoleon’s first aide-de-camp, recalls the Emperor at close quarters: his temper and clemency, his family quarrels, his courage under the infernal machine, and his conduct of war. The memoir follows Rapp through the great campaigns to Russia in 1812 and beyond.
