From the kiss with which Jacob deceived his blind father to the greetings of Victorian society, Bombaugh assembles a curious library on the subject. Chapters gather the kiss among the Hebrews, in the Bible, among Greeks and Romans, in English history and in local customs, followed by a large anthology of kisses from Shakespeare, the poets and the wits.
