An American writing as the second Boer War broke out in October 1899, Le Roy Hooker tells the history of the Dutch in South Africa. He traces the colony at the Cape from 1652, the first British arrivals, the treks inland, the founding of the Transvaal and Orange Free State and the quarrels with Britain that led to war. Its view of Black Africans is that of 1900.
