F. F. Arbuthnot, the orientalist who worked with Richard Burton, compiled this manual for general readers and beginning students. It sketches Arabian history before and after Islam, the life of Muhammad and the poetry fairs at Okatz, and then surveys the historians, geographers, poets and scholars of Arabic literature.
A Victorian introduction to a vast literature, still useful as a first map of the field. Download the free EPUB.
