In 1841 the English adventurer James Brooke became Rajah of Sarawak in northern Borneo, and his nephew Charles succeeded him in 1868. This history covers the island’s peoples, the founding of the Brooke state, campaigns against Dayak and Malay pirates, the long resistance of the chief Rentap, and the uprisings and intrigues of the following decades, with a preface by Rajah Charles himself.
Written with the Brookes’ cooperation and from the rulers’ side, it is a revealing record of one of the strangest dynasties of the colonial era. Download the free EPUB.
