Inspired by Roscoe’s life of Lorenzo de’ Medici, the Liverpool scholar William Shepherd tells the story of Poggio Bracciolini, secretary to popes, hunter of lost manuscripts and later chancellor of Florence. The book covers the Council of Constance, Poggio’s discoveries, his quarrels with fellow humanists and the revival of letters.
