Harper tells the story of English smuggling, the trade of the ‘free-traders’ whose goods came ashore by night while the Gentlemen went by. He travels the coasts and marshes where they worked, recounts their running battles with the revenue men and the legends they left behind, and weighs the long argument over whether smuggling was a crime at all.
A colourful and well-illustrated history for readers who know smugglers from Kipling’s poem and Cornish legend. Download the free EPUB.
