Captain Crutchley went to sea in 1863, in the age of clippers and Aberdeen-built tea ships, and served until 1894, by which time steam had taken over. He recalls hard voyages, fast passages, the ships he sailed and the examiners who tested him on handling a sailing ship under short canvas in heavy weather.
