Besant sets out to paint the City of London as a series of instantaneous photographs: the merchant on the quays, the shopkeeper of Cheapside, monks and friars, apprentices with their clubs, the Lord Mayor’s Riding and the criminal dragged to the pillory. His chapters move from the years after the Romans through Saxon, Norman, Plantagenet and Tudor London to the age of Charles II and George II.
Street-level history at its most vivid, by one of London’s great Victorian chroniclers. Download the free EPUB.
