In 1906 the German ethnologist Karl Weule travelled inland from the coast of what is now southern Tanzania, recording the crafts, songs, stories, initiation rites and daily life of the Yao, Makonde and neighbouring peoples. He camps at the chief Matola’s village, marches south to the Rovuma and describes his methods frankly, in Alice Werner’s English translation.
A detailed early ethnography, valuable for its observations though its colonial attitudes are those of its time. Download the free EPUB.
