The antiquary William Stukeley walked and measured the great stone circles of Avebury in Wiltshire in the 1720s, when many stones still stood that were later broken up, and recorded the avenues, banks and outlying monuments in detail. His interpretation of the site as a serpent temple built by Druid priests is pure speculation and long discredited, but his field records remain valuable.
