Five books trace the Roman church from its foundation by the apostles Peter and Paul, through the persecution after the great fire under Nero, the correspondence of Pliny and Trajan about Christians, and the reign of Hadrian. Later sections describe how an ordinary believer lived and worshipped, and walk the reader through the catacombs, their tombs, inscriptions and the relics that pilgrims sought.
Written by the Dean of Gloucester, it suits readers who want a narrative history of the church’s first centuries in the imperial capital. Download the free EPUB.
