Havell retells the great episodes of Thucydides’ history of the war between Athens and Sparta in plain, vigorous prose. Readers follow the quarrel of Corinth and Corcyra, the surprise attack on Plataea, the plague at Athens, Phormio’s naval victories, the revolt of Lesbos and the trapping of Spartan soldiers on Sphacteria.
