Peter Parley’s creator offers short lives of great figures of the ancient and early medieval world, among them Mohammed, Belisarius, Attila, Nero, Seneca, Virgil and Cicero. He shapes each sketch for moral instruction, lingering on what the reader should admire or avoid, and is more sparing in praise of conquerors than most historians of his day.
A period piece of nineteenth-century American education, still readable as an introduction to famous lives. Download the free EPUB.
