Eckenstein worked with Flinders Petrie at the Egyptian temple of Serabit in 1906 and went on to write the history of the whole peninsula: the turquoise mines of the pharaohs, the ancient hill sanctuary, the routes of the Exodus, Nabataeans and Romans, and the Christian hermits and monks who settled among its mountains.
