Born into slavery in Virginia, Austin Steward describes plantation life, the horse-racing and cruelty of the great house, and his removal with his master’s household to Sodus Bay and Bath in New York. Gaining his freedom, he became a Rochester merchant and later president of the Wilberforce colony of Black settlers in Canada West.
