Washington recounts his birth in slavery, boyhood in the West Virginia salt furnaces and coal mines, schooling at Hampton Institute and the founding of Tuskegee in Alabama. Later chapters cover his Atlanta Cotton States Exposition speech of 1895, his honorary degree from Harvard and his appeals for justice.
Published in 1900, a year before Up from Slavery, it shows his story as first told to a Black readership. Download the free EPUB.
