After his capture in 1831, Nat Turner told the Virginia lawyer Thomas R. Gray the story of his life, his religious visions and the uprising he led in Southampton County. Gray published the account with court records and lists of the dead and the accused, framing it for a frightened white readership.
One of the most important and contested documents of American slavery, to be read with Gray’s motives in mind. Download the free EPUB.
