Pardee Butler, a preacher of the Disciples of Christ, settled in Kansas Territory in the 1850s and spoke openly against slavery. His recollections describe being set adrift on the Missouri River on a raft by a pro-slavery mob at Atchison, the factional quarrels of the Free-State movement and his years as an itinerant evangelist, with additions by his daughter.
