During the Napoleonic Wars, French officers held on parole live among the gentry of a quiet West Country town, and Miss Westcote of Bayfield, a sensible spinster past her first youth, comes to know the young prisoner Raoul. A ball, a snowstorm and a clash between a high horse and a hobby open a restrained, ironic tale of feeling that arrives late.
A delicate short novel dedicated to Henry James, and very much in his spirit. Download the free EPUB.
