Leaving Tours on a spring morning, riotously happy, a young man of Touraine rides straight into the trap of Sergeant Dubosq, and finds himself in the troubled country of the Bocage, where revolutionary France is at war with itself. A friendship with an enemy, a captivity that turns pleasant, a love he dares to declare, and a siege follow.
