After the Porteous Riots of 1736 shake Edinburgh, Effie Deans lies in the Tolbooth prison, condemned under a harsh law for the presumed murder of her newborn child. Her sister Jeanie, a devout cowfeeder’s daughter, will not lie to save her in court, and instead sets out on foot for London to seek mercy from the Crown.
