Framed as the long-suppressed narrative of the fifth baronet of the Craven family, the novel follows a British officer through the fighting around King’s Mountain and a spell on parole in South Carolina. There he meets the enigmatic Madam Constantia, runs up against Marion the Swamp Fox and his partisans, and finds his loyalties strained in a country divided between patriots, Tories and trimmers.
