In sixteenth-century Leyden, the young Lysbeth van Hout is tricked into marriage by the Spanish captain Montalvo, and her family is drawn into the long war of the Netherlands against Spanish rule. The story follows her sons, the hearty Foy and the vain, wavering Adrian, through persecution, the Inquisition and the terrible siege of their city.
