Writing as Ikey Solomons Jr., Thackeray tells the story of Catherine Hayes, a village girl seduced by the German Count Galgenstein who grows up to murder her husband. Captain Brock, a rogue soldier, and a cast of swindlers keep the tale moving, while the narrator pointedly refuses to make any of them attractive.
Thackeray’s first novel, a sharp satire on the Newgate fiction of Ainsworth and Bulwer-Lytton. Download the free EPUB.
