The Baron de Sigognac lives in poverty in his crumbling Castle Misery in the Landes until a company of strolling actors seeks shelter there. Falling in love with their gentle ingénue Isabelle, he leaves with them, takes the stage role of the braggart Captain Fracasse, and finds himself fighting brigands, snowstorms and the arrogant Duke of Vallombreuse, a swordsman who wants Isabelle for himself.
