On Mersea Island in the Essex marshes in the time of Charles II, smugglers run cargoes under the leadership of a mysterious figure known as Black’erchief Dick, and a young woman named Pet is drawn into their dangerous trade. Wrecks, superstition and a half-wild old woman who understands sea-folk and their tricks fill the story.
