On a snowy evening in January 1793, an old lady who once breathed the air of courts slips through the deserted streets of the Faubourg Saint-Martin to a garret where she and another nun hide a priest who refused the oath. A stranger who has followed her asks the priest for a secret Mass, and his reason is bound up with the fate of the king.
A taut, haunting short story of conscience and the Revolution from the Comédie humaine. Download the free EPUB.
