Agnes, raised by her grandmother among the orange groves of Sorrento, dreams of the convent and is guided by a confessor, Father Francesco. Her innocence draws the love of a proud young nobleman at odds with the Church, and their story carries her toward Rome and Florence, where Savonarola is preaching against corruption.
